The oldest elementary school in Jefferson County and serves students in Kindergarten thru 5th grade; provides academic opportunities that involve high expectations, in-depth thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Partnership programs include:
- Student field placement - Students from education and nursing are placed in the school as part of their program requirement. Education students provide assistance to teachers in the classroom while nursing students provide health education classes providing students with tips to stay healthy.
- Mentoring - School of Nursing students also serve as mentors to the elementary students. Mentors work with their mentees to help them do better in their school work and be healthier students.
- Professional Development - In collaboration with the College of Education and Human Development, professional development is offered to teachers in literacy as part of the Kentucky Reading Project and the Louisville Writing Project. Follow-up support is provided to teachers during the fall and spring semesters.
- Schoolyard Redesign - The City Solution Center in the Department of Urban Planning and Design provides consultation in landscaping the schoolyard. The City Solutions Center gathered information to inform the redesign process, creating a space that serves the needs of the school and the surrounding neighborhood.
- A faculty member from the College of Education and Human Development serves as a liaison to the school offering assistance to the school's environmental magnet program.
- One Oxley Fellow is being put in place. This Fellow will receive six hours of paid tuition per semester while they serve as a model teacher in the school for other teachers and assist with UofL education students placed in the school.
Programs in which the University of Louisville was previously involved
- Faculty and staff provided consultation on school's redesign team during its transition to an Environmental Magnet School.
