**Listed below are examples of the types of summer youth opportunities provided by or in conjunction with UofL.  This list is provided as a service to the community so please check back the first of the year as we start to compile the list for Summer 2013.

Brown Forman INSPIRE Summer Enrichment Program *updated for 2013

INSPIRE is a summer program designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to participate in activities related to basic engineering skills in a college environment.  The program targets students historically under-represented in engineering, but it is open to all.

Louisville area High School Students/ June 11-28/ 9:30am-noon/ free

Accounting Careers Awareness Program

Residential program for minority HS students to learn about business career opportunities

Future Scholars Program

An academic enrichment experience for local African American high school students sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.  For each participant, the Summer Program is structured around a research project supervised by a University faculty mentor and a research/writing class (at the Writing Center) in which students learn to use college-level research methods and appropriate technological aids. Under the supervision of their mentors, participants present their research at a closing ceremony.

Rising African American High-School Juniors/ Monday, July 9 - Friday July 27, 2012/ 10am-4pm/ Presentation of participants' final project is the evening on Friday, July 27th/ free but lunch not included

Summer Law Institute

A seven-day residential program for high school students interested in the law and the legal profession. Students will learn the fundamentals of trial procedure, discuss important legal and social issues, and study how the law affects their lives. This program provides an opportunity to meet and interact with local lawyers, judges, and law professors. Throughout the week, students will be participating in workshops and mock trial practice at the Brandeis School of Law, traveling to the Jefferson County Judicial Center for trial observation and a tour, and visiting Bellarmine’s campus for additional trial preparation. The camp concludes with a mock trial on Saturday.

High School Students/ June 10th- June 16th, 2012/ cost-$150

The E.S.S.E.N.C.E. Program *updated for 2013

The purpose of the E.S.S.E.N.C.E. Program is to create an opportunity for young women of color to intentionally participate in activities and relationships that work to improve on who they are. This involves discussions, workshops, field trips, and service projects that relate to building a positive self-esteem, cultural identification, leadership abilities, and strengthening academic skills and goals.

 8th-9th grade African American women/ Monday, June 10- Friday, June 28, 2013/ 10am-4pm/ There is required closing ceremony on Friday, June 28, 6-8pm/ Free (lunch not included)

Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium Summer Camps *updated for 2013

Whether your child is a budding da Vinci or an astronaut in training, summer camps at the planetarium are sure to please.  Camps are filled with hands-on exploration and creation ranging from making mosaics, telescopes, solar ovens and rockets to using technology to probe and experiment.  Campers stay engaged, excited and eager to return.  Blast off into summer fun at the planetarium and spark your child's life-long love of science! (Note: activities are based on grade level and camp theme).

Space Adventure Camp: June 10-14 and June 17-21, entering grades 2 to 4

Space Engineering Camp: June 24-28, entering grades 7 to 9

Art Stars Camp: July 15-19, entering grades 1 to 3

Space Engineering Camp: July 29-August 2, entering grades 5 to 6

 Dance Camp * Updated for 2013

A dance experience for 6-8 year olds that includes creative movement, ballet, ballet videos and crafts.

Kids 5 to 8 yr olds/ June 10-14, 2013/ $150

A Measure of Engineering *Updated for 2013

Focus on measurement, geometry, scales, ratios, visualization and orthographic projection.  Students will use engineering drawings and measurement to participate in hands-on activities.

6th, 7th & 8th Graders/ June 24 - 28, 2013/ $150 per student

LEGO Aquabotics * Updated for 2013

Students who have participated in land-based robotics projects (not required) will explore the complexities of the underwater environment while presented with unique demands.  They will design and construct an aquabot, design a controller, and create a program to attempt various challenges.

6th, 7th, & 8th graders/July 29-August 2, 2013/$150 per student

McConnell Center's Young Leaders Academy * Updated for 2013

Kentucky students, grades 9-12, are eligible to apply for the Young Leaders Academy, a summer residential leadership conference at the University of Louisville.  The McConnell Center offers this annual program to outstanding high school students to help hone their leadership skills and further their understanding of American history.  The theme for this year's conference, "Roots of the U.S.," will explore five cities and how their influence became part of the American tradition.  Each participant will receive a scholarship for the Young Leaders Academy that includes free lodging, meals and all conference materials.  Applications are due May 15th.
