Center for Predictive Medicine

June 3, 2008

To our neighbors:

We learned recently that a letter dated May 26 containing false information about our biosafety lab has been circulating in the community. We are troubled and saddened by this letter.

The University of Louisville has taken and is taking necessary steps to avoid putting our neighbors at risk. In fact, we began talking with people in the neighborhoods near our Center for Predictive Medicine in 2005, before we even applied for a National Institutes of Health grant to build the lab. We wanted to hear what our neighbors thought about the project and to make sure they were comfortable with it.

Since then, we have held eight public forums about the lab on our Shelby Campus. These forums are open to everyone and we are continuing to have them (in fact, our next one will be on July 10). The idea is for people to be able to talk directly with the experts in charge of our lab so they can get all of their questions answered first-hand.

Also, we have put a great deal of information on this website and at the main Louisville Free Public Library about our lab. We urge you to read over this information, particularly the question-and-answer feature, and make up your own mind about the safety and security of our biosafety lab.

If you find you still have questions, feel free to contact Denise Fitzpatrick via our community information line at 852-1113 or through the ÒSend Us A NoteÓ feature on this web page. Ms. Fitzpatrick has extensive background about the lab and is happy to discuss it with you in as much detail as you require.

We look forward to continue to work with our neighbors on this important project.

Sincerely,

James R. Ramsey
President
University of Louisville
