Roles of the Feeding Team Members

Speech-Language Pathologist:

  • Evaluate the oral structure and oral-motor function
  • Identify clinical symptoms of swallowing dysfunction
  • Assess the child's communication during feeding
  • Develop an appropriate treatment plan designed to improve oral-motor function

 

Occupational Therapist:

  • Evaluate muscle tome, posistioning, and postual control
  • Assess oral-sensory responses to identify the presence of over or under-sensitivity
  • Evaluate and address self-feeding skills
  • Explore appropriate adaptive equipment needs
  • Develop a program to help normalize sensory responding through non-nutritive and nutritive means to advance the child's acceptance of food tastes and textures

 

Psychologist:

  • Identify and define problems feeding behaviors (e.g. vomiting, gagging, refusal to eat), antecedents to the behaviors, and the consequences that shape and maintian these behaviors
  • Observe and evaluate the interaction between the parent's feeding style and the child's feeding behaviors
  • Develop a program that develops and reinforces appropriate feeding behaviors

 

Dietitian:

  • Assess nutritional stutus including growth, weight changes, and nutrient intake
  • Design a nutritionally complete feeding plan based on the child's needs, meal schedules, food preferences and aversions.
