Overview

The Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center (WCEC),  a division of the University of Louisville School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, was established to help children who have special needs realize their full potential.  After a few years of operation only in Louisville, it was realized that there was a need for the staff at the Center to travel to various locations in western Kentucky to serve children whose parents/guardians had difficulty traveling to Louisville.  With a grant provided by the Kentucky Division for Adult and Child Health, a partnership was established between the WCEC and local establishments in the Green River, Lincoln Trail and Purchase District areas.  Later a fourth site was added in the Barren River area.  Children under the age of six years continue to be served in these four areas of Kentucky.

Services

The WCEC Developmental Outreach Clinics provide initial evaluations by developmental pediatricians and child psychologists.  These clinics are intended to serve children under the age of six years who may have autism, behavior problems, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental delay, cerebral palsy, or those who may have a developmental disorder and are not responding to therapeutic intervention.  Children over the age of sixe years may be seen for follow up evaluations at the discretion of the evaluation team.  

Referrals

A written referral from a physician, school system or First Steps is required for a child to be seen in an outreach clinic.  These referrals should be sent directly to the Weisskopf Child Evaluation Center or to the clinic nearest to the child’s county or residence.  Upon receipt of a referral, an application for the developmental outreach clinic will be mailed to the child’s parents or legal guardian.
