Children exposed to alcohol in utero face lifelong challenges. These include memory problems, social deficits, executive function deficits, impairments in spatial learning, problem solving, language, coordination and attention. With early diagnosis and intervention, the child can find a better fit with the environment.
When people begin to establish the link between alcohol effects and behavior, they are able to make a change in their expectations of children with FASD. This paradigm shift creates success stories among children with FASD.
Services
- Evaluations by a developmental pediatrician, a geneticist, a psychologist, a speech and language pathologist and a clinical social worker.
- Psychoeducational testing and occupational therapy evaluation, as needed.
- Case management services in the context of other community and educational services by a licensed clinical social worker.
Referral Procedures
A written referral from a physician is required for a child to be seen at the UofL FASD Clinic. Upon receipt of a referral, an application form for the clinic will be mailed to the child’s parent or legal guardian. All appointments are scheduled following receipt of the application form.
