B.A. Chemistry - PreMed Tract

Description

This tailored Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry is designed to meet the core academic needs of premedical students. Less rigorous than the Bachelor of Science Degrees in Chemistry, it still includes the requirements specified by the University of Louisville's School of Medicine admissions. There is substantial flexibility in course selection due to the large number of electives. Advantages of this program include completion of all coursework and medical school requirements in preparation for the MCAT prior to senior year; freedom to choose electives from a variety of life science and natural science courses highly recommended by medical school admissions; and, the possibility of fulfilling degree requirements for selected minors without extending your undergraduate years.

Besides providing a solid foundation in the sciences for premedical students, this B.A. Degree program is also suitable for those aspiring to careers in biotechnology. Graduates might opt to work as laboratory technicians in the pharmaceutical industry, as research assistants in medical school science departments such as toxicology or biochemistry, or as technicians in biotechnology firms.

Course Schedule

Below is a sample four-year setup. A student's actual schedule may depend upon precollege preparation, course load and/or other factors; therefore, a student's schedule may deviate from the one provided. Notice that CD requirements are double-counted as General Education requirements in either Arts & Humanities or in Social & Behavioral Sciences. Chemistry electives may include any of the following: Chem 320, 390WR, 391, 392, 420WR, 430, 445, 450, 491, 492, 515, 528, 529, 545, 546, 547, 557. The College requires two upper level WR courses, only one of which is shown in the semester listing below. The second WR can be a chemistry elective (390WR or 420WR) or a course outside the department. At least 50 hours must be at the 300 level or above. This is important to keep in mind when selecting electives and Social Sciences & Humanities courses. Of the three GenEd courses in Social and Behavioral Sciences, one must be within the Department of History. In Arts and Humanities, you must take one of each (designated A or H by the College). No more than 40 hours in Chemistry may apply towards the Bachelor of Arts degree.
