Dr. Gradus Lawrence Shoemaker
At the age of 97, Dr. Gradus Shoemaker passed away peacefully on December 24, 2018. In 1949, Dr. Shoemaker became an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Louisville. Throughout his tenure, he served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, Chairman of the Division of Natural Science and as Commencement Grand Marshal for thirteen years. He was the last surviving member of the chemistry group that introduced the PhD (chemistry) program to UofL in the early 1950’s.
