As part of the initiation of the UofL Goes Smoke-Free policy, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and prescription medicine for students who qualify medically will be provided by UofL at no cost for up to 90 days of use. This option is available to currently enrolled UofL students who participate in a UofL sponsored or approved cessation program from January 1, 2010 through May 2011.
In order to receive nicotine replacement products or medications to assist with smoking cessation, students will be required to participate in one of the smoking cessation programs and demonstrate continued participation. Participation in a smoking cessation program increases the success rates of these replacement products. These products and medications are dispensed by the smoking cessation program facilitator or Campus Health Services. Students will not be reimbursed for the cost of NRT or smoking cessation medications if purchased elsewhere. After 90 days of NRT and/or medication, the student will be responsible for the cost of any NRT or smoking cessation medications.
Smoking Cessation Program Options
* Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation Program (13 weeks).
Classes offered on the Belknap Campus and HSC. Click here for date/location details and to enroll.
* BecomeANEX Online Program.
Students self-enroll at http://becomeanex.org/. In order to receive free NRT or medication support, students are also required to schedule and attend weekly brief coaching sessions at Campus Health Services or the Counseling Center.
Guidelines to Receive NRT Products
Currently enrolled students who sign up for one of the two approved smoking cessation programs will be eligible for nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum or lozenges).
Student who participate in the Cooper-Clayton classes receive their NRT products weekly from the class facilitator in the Spring 2011 classes.
Students who opt for the web-based BecomeAnEx program are required to attend brief weekly coaching sessions in order to receive weekly supplies of NRT. They are required to verify BecomeAnEx enrollment and continual participation in the online program. Students may choose to schedule coaching sessions with Health Promotion staff at Campus Health Services or the Counseling Center. Call 852-5429 to schedule coaching sessions with Campus Health Services OR 852-6585 to schedule coaching sessions with the Counseling Center.
Guidelines to Receive Medications and Medical Management
Students interested in using medications designed to help adults 18 years and older quit smoking are required to make an appointment to be evaluated by a medical provider at Campus Health Services. Appointment number: 852-6479. The student is responsible for knowing how the cost of the medical visits will be paid: office visits are covered by the primary health care fee and the UofL sponsored Academic Health Plan insurance. Standard office visit co-pays apply for all other insurance policies.
Only a Campus Health Services medical provider can determine if smoking cessation medication use is appropriate for a student. If medication is initiated, the student is responsible for subsequent medical visits to receive monitoring related to the smoking cessation prescription protocol. Medications will be dispensed in 30 day supplies (with no automatic refills) and only with verification of program participation. Medication will be provided for only 90 days free of charge. Selection of either Zyban (bupropion) or Chantix medication is made by the provider. Chantix will not be prescribed without a 30 day trial of Zyban, unless medically contraindicated.
When a student is medically approved to receive medication, verification of participation in one of the two approved smoking cessation programs is required in order to receive the medication. Students in the Cooper-Clayton classes are required to verify class attendance in order to receive a starter pack and subsequent refills. Students who opt for the web-based BecomeAnEx program will schedule weekly coaching sessions with a Health Promotion staff at Campus Health Services or with the Counseling Center to document verification of enrollment and of continual participation in the online program. To schedule coaching sessions, call Campus Health at 852-5429 OR the Counseling Center at 852-6585.
