Thomas L. Abell,  M.D., professor of medicine in the department of gastroenterology, joined the faculty at UofL in 2012.

Dr. Abell’s work focuses on autonomic and enteric factors in patients with nutrition and weight disorders and patients with the symptoms of gastroparesis. He has been active in the NIH Gastroparesis Clinical Research Consortium since its inception.

Dr. Abell completed his medical degree at the University of South Dakota in Sioux Falls before going on to complete residencies in family and internal medicine at the Ohio State University in Columbus and Baptist Hospital in Memphis, TN.  He completed a fellowship in GI research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and another in GI Clinical at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.  He is board certified in family medicine, internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Among his many awards is the Gold Research Award from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Dr. Abell has dozens of peer-reviewed publications to his name, including several in Gastroenterology, the premier publication of his specialty.
