THE PROGRAM
Program Participants will have a great opportunity to become acquainted frst hand with Brazilian culture, a mix of infuences from the Portuguese, the Africans, Western Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Program participants will experience its rich tradition in music, food, dance, art, and religion and will study how current day Brazilian culture developed from combining the autochthonous and the traditions brought from abroad.

LOCATION
The program takes place in São Jose do Rio Preto, located 280 miles (450 km) northwest of the city of São Paulo. UNESP (The State University of São Paulo) hosts the students and welcomed them to its campus. The classes taught by UofL and UNESP faculty take full advantage of this optimal setting to explore up close major issues surrounding this booming Latin American country. As part of the UofL/UNESP agreeement, and at the center of the UofL Brazilian Studies Program, the places we visit do wonders for students who are eager to explore the rich cultural heritage ofered by this fascinating country.

ACTIVITIES
Activities will vary according to the course you will take. As part of the program price, all students will enjoy visits to the cities of Rio de Janeiro (the famous cidade maravilhosa), and São Paulo. Participants will visit sugar and citrus processing plants, several museums, and many local attractions.

COST: $3100 includes the following:

  • Round-trip airfare from Louisville to São Paulo.

  • All domestic transportation, including airport transfers.

  • Room (Students will stay with Brazilian families).

  • Excursion fees.

  • 6 credits: Participants will receive full UofL credit.

  • It does not include the following: individual spending money, meals, textbooks, passport fees, fee for Brazilian Visa ($160.00 + 72.00 processing fee), health insurance, immunizations and some optional excursions.

FINANCIAL AID:

The College of Arts and Sciences will offer scholarships. Program participants are encouraged to apply for all available scholarships such as the Richard & Constance Lewis Scholar Awards, The Modern Languages Fund, the International Center Scholarship & others. Most applications become available in the Fall semester.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Completed application with a $100 deposit (applied to the program’s total cost) due by Monday February 1, 2016.  NOTE: We are still accepting applications.

The balance of fees are due as follows:

  • Program first payment due: 3/21/2016 Amount due: $1000
  • Program second payment due: 4/18/2016 Amount due: $1000
  • Program final payment due: 5/9/2016 Amount due: $1,000
  • Upon acceptance, you will need to submit UofL international travel forms.

COURSES

  • Modern Languages 313/599, Brazilian Cultural Studies. (3 credits)

    The students will explore Brazil’s place in the world by analyzing the political and ideological discourse that has helped and continues to contribute to develop the Brazilian imagination, as it is perceived from outside and inside of Brazilian borders.

  • Spanish 670, Contemporary Issues in the Hispanic World. (3 credits)

  • Opportunity to conduct an Internship.
