Research Support Fund

Background

Established in 2006, the Center for Asian Democracy promotes research & teaching by UofL faculty, graduate students, & visiting scholars, on democracy & the prospects for democratization in Asia. With these goals in mind, CAD has established a Research Support Fund (RSF) to provide funding to support UofL faculty with projects that relate to that mission.  Requests for funding could include assistance with CAD-related travel, seminars, conferences, interviews, data set purchase, or workshops. Applications must be for projects related to the study of Asian democracy*. The overall goals of the program are two-fold: first, to broaden the scope of the work of the Center for Asian Democracy and second, to establish or enhance interdisciplinary research collaboration.

Proposal and Review Guidelines

Applications must contain the following parts:
•    A statement of purpose that outlines the planned research and discusses its
relevance to CAD as well as the applicant’s academic, professional and personal goals. The statement should elaborate on the purpose, method, anticipated outcomes and significance of the project.
•    A budget for the research
•    The applicant’s CV

Requests for Research Support Funds will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the CAD. Awards will be determined based on the extent to which the proposed research contributes to the study of democracy and democratization in Asia and thus corresponds with the mission statement of the Center. All applications should address how the proposed activities will achieve one or more of these objectives.

Application Process

All faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences (i.e., individuals with at least a half-time teaching appointment in a department or multidisciplinary program) are encouraged to apply, regardless of rank or status (although preference will be given to full-time continuing faculty). Applications should be submitted to the CAD Program Coordinator, Amanda LeDuke.

Applications will be accepted on an on-going basis throughout the academic year. However, once the budgeted funds are awarded, no new applications will be considered until the next academic year. The application should be submitted electronically as a Word or PDF file via e-mail to amanda.leduke@louisville.edu with the subject line “CAD-RSF Application.” A confirmation e-mail will be sent upon receipt of the application. Applicants will be notified of the funding decisions three weeks after submitting a proposal.  The maximum grant award is $1500.
