Course Development Fund
Course Development Fund
Background:
Established in 2006, the Center for Asian Democracy promotes research & teaching by UofL faculty, graduate students, & visiting scholars, on democracy & the prospects for democratization in Asia. With these goals in mind, CAD has established a Course Development Fund (CDF) to provide funding to support the development of new (interdisciplinary) courses that contribute to the greater understanding of democratization and the processes of social, economic and political change in Asia. The overall goals of the program are two-fold: first, to increase interest in interdisciplinary work among both the faculty and students and second, to establish or enhance interdisciplinary research collaboration.
Proposal and Review Guidelines
Requests for Course Development Funds will be reviewed by the CAD. Awards will be determined based on the extent to which the proposed course broadly corresponds with the mission statement of the Center. Priority will therefore be given to (but are not exclusive of) proposals for courses that (1) include comparative analysis of processes of democratization (2) can be cross-listed in two or more departments and (3) are inter-disciplinary. All applications should address how the proposed activities will achieve one or more of these objectives.
Participating faculty members will choose either for their department to receive sufficient funds for them to pay for release time (one course) during the academic year or, alternatively, to receive a summer stipend. Successful recipients of the award are required to submit the course for approval by their relevant departments as soon as possible. In the interim it is expected that courses will be offered as a “special topics” (non-required) course.
Applicants must provide approval from the Chairs of their departments, indicating: 1) that the proposed course is in line with departmental goals and, 2) if a course release is requested, that the course release is approved and will be provided if the faculty member is awarded the funds. Faculty members who receive funding will be expected to submit a proposal for the new course at the earliest possible opportunity.
Application Process
All faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences (i.e., individuals with at least a half-time teaching appointment in a department or multidisciplinary program) are encouraged to apply, regardless of rank or status (although preference will be given to full-time continuing faculty). Applications should be submitted to the CAD Program Coordinator, Amanda LeDuke.
The deadline for the funds for 2011-2012 is September 30th. The application should be submitted electronically as a Word or PDF file via e-mail to amanda.leduke@louisville.edu with the subject line “CAD-CDF Application.” A confirmation e-mail will be sent upon receipt of the application. Applicants will be notified of the funding decisions by mid-October 2011.
