Democracy in Indonesia, Hopes and Fears

As the fourth largest country and the largest Islam country in the world, Indonesia has tremendous impact on the Asian region as well on the world.   What is the prospect for democracy in Indonesia?  What are the experiences and lessens that we can learn from the Indonesian democratization process?  These are some of the questions that Ambassador Alphonse F. La Porta will address.

Ambassador Alphonse F. La Porta assumed the presidency of The United States-Indonesia Society on April 1, 2004.  Previously, Mr. La Porta served as the Political Advisor to the U.S. Commander-in-Chief of the Regional Headquarters Allied Forces in southern Europe from January 2001 to November 2003.  Mr. La Porta was the U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia from December 1997 to November 2000.
