 Dr. Shiping Hua

Dr. Shiping Hua is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville. His single-authored books are: Scientism and Humanism: Two Cultures in Post-Mao China (1978-1989) (The State University of New York Press, 1995) and Chinese Utopianism: A Comparative Study of Reformist Thought in Japan, Russia and China (1898-1997) (Stanford University Press-Wilson Center Press, 2008). He has published six edited/coedited books in English. Topics include: US-China relations, the Taiwan issue, Chinese political culture, China’s foreign policy, China’s rise and Chinese political civilization, and Islam and democratization in Asia. He has published two books in Chinese. His articles and presentations have appeared in popular media, such as Wilson Quarterly, The New York Times, and The Voice of America.

Dr. Hua is the general editor of two book series: “Asia in the New Millennium,” with University Press of Kentucky published annually in English: and “Contemporary World’s Classics: Political Science Series (translations),” with Renmin University of China Press published annually in Chinese. He is Guest Professor with China’s Peking University and Renmin University of China. He had served as the President of the Association of Chinese Political Studies Association (2004-2006) and Council Chairman of the United Societies of China Studies (2006-2009). Both were based in the United States.  He was Asian Policy Studies Fellow at Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars during the 2004-2005 academic year.

 Dr. Hua teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Louisville that include: “Clash of Civilizations,” “Japan, China and the United States,” “Comparative Politics,” “East Asian Politics,” “Introduction to Asian Studies,” “The Pacific Century,” and “The People’s Republic of China.”
