2006 Korea: Transitions and Transformations Workshop

About 60 scholars and community leaders attended the workshop: Korea: Transitions and Transformations, hosted by the newly established Center for Asian Democracy and the Institute for Democracy and Development, October 8-10 at the University of Louisville.  These scholars came from as far as Hawaii, Alaska and Washington D.C. are mostly University professors who teach Asian Studies.

Former U.S. Ambassador Thomas Hubbard gave a well received speech on Korea at the workshop.  The participants were especially interested in learning about his comments on the recent nuclear test in North Korea.

On the recent North Korea crisis, Dr. Edward Schultz, the University of Hawaii, Dr. Chiabong Hahm, University of Southern California, and U of L graduate students David Frost and Andrew Fowler were interviewed by the local TV station WHAS.  The news was broadcast at 10:00 pm, October 9, 2006.

Seven U of L faculty, staff and graduate students worked volunteers at the workshop: Sherri Moore, Pat Condon, Suyin Ma, Hyemi Sevening, Glyppie Grider, Andrew Fowler, and Ken Moore.

Betty Buck, our collaborator at the Asian Studies Development Program which is affiliated with the East-West Center and the University of Hawaii, was very satisfied with the workshop.  The workshop was funded by the Freeman Foundation and the University of Louisville.
