The Theory of Sedimentation and the Structure of Cultural Space and Time: Analysis of the Cultural Materialism of Harbin, PR China

The concept of time and space varies across cultures. In many cultures, these are defined by metaphors. In Western thought, the dominate metaphor is time as space and that space is linear. The Sedimentation Theory of Time and space is used to define cultural space as archeological layers in which the present in embedded in the past. Cultural time is defined and articulated by cultural space and that space is further embedded in the physical space of human geography. This model is introduced and it is used to explain the cultural of Harbin, PR of China. This presentation is part of a book on cultural space that includes the analysis of various cultural terrains and their geographical spaces.
