Nepal’s Civil War in the Context of Globalization
Allen Furr is Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology and an affiliate professor with the Asia Studies Program at the University of Louisville. He has conducted research in Nepal and has seen first-hand the consequences of Maoist actions on the national social infrastructure and the people. He has interviewed many Nepalese with sympathies on both sides of the conflict, and his theories on Nepal have been published in India.
Dr. Allen Furr
Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology
Isolated from the rest of the world only a half century ago, Nepal, the world’s last Hindu Kingdom, has struggled in its attempts to shed its feudalistic past and establish a modern state. A violent and now splintered Maoist rebellion has further weakened the country and plunged Nepal into an abyss of uncertainty. Dr. Furr’s talk will put the rebellion into a socio-historical context and pose a theoretical argument that the Maoists have exposed inherent weaknesses in the social fabric of Nepal that may limit the future viability of the nation.
