Building the force: ROTC grad, Guardsman achieves goals
Matt Payne can take pride in several accomplishments celebrated this spring. The summa cum laude graduate became a second lieutenant with the Army ROTC commissioning ceremony in May that preceded commencement.
A&S junior is Kentucky’s only 2021 Truman Scholar
University of Louisville junior Lexi Raikes has won Kentucky’s only Harry S. Truman Scholarship for 2021. The award, valued at $30,000, is given to just 62 U.S. college students annually. It is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States.

Literature and culture conference features authors in free keynote sessions
The wide-ranging Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900 will attract more than 300 writers, critics and literary scholars from around the world to the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus Feb. 20-22, 2020.
2020 French Film Festival offers animation, drama, comedy
An animated mystery, a romantic comedy and several dramas, including a sneak-peek U.S. screening, make up the six free, public film showings during the University of Louisville’s French Film Festival Feb. 6-March 7, 2020 at UofL and Speed Art Museum.
Environmental Studies student is a 2019 Fulbright Scholar
Sanders graduated from UofL in May of 2019 as a double major in Anthropology and Environmental Studies with a minor in Russian Studies. Prior to receiving the Fulbright award, she was named a Vogt and honors scholar and received both the Anthropology and Liberal Arts departments’ Awards of Merit.
Lessons learned, applied: Students celebrate Day of the Dead, educate others
Giant kites and cypress wreaths, sugar skulls and votive offerings, altars and paper flowers. University of Louisville students are learning about and educating others on and off campus about these seasonal elements of the annual Day of the Dead celebration that span Latin American cultures.

Keionna Bailey, a senior communications major from Lexington, wanted to serve her fellow students and found her niche as a speech mentor. She spends a lot of time in UofL's Speech Center helping people through the entire speech-making process, from creating the outline to delivery.

Belonging/Exile/Place - Humanities Research Lab CFA
Application Deadline: January 18th 2019. The Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society is organized around an annual theme that provides the foundation for the Faculty Fellows Program, the academic year’s scheduled events, and for a Humanities Research Lab, involving a bimonthly colloquium. The theme for the 2019-2020 academic year will be Belonging/Exile/Place.

Fulbright fulfillment: Persistence pays off for A&S Alumna
Jessica Williams,a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences with degrees in Spanish, political science and Latin American and Latino studies, tried three times to earn a prestigious Fulbright scholarship. In early September, her diligence was rewarded: she learned she was selected for the prize and will spend most of 2018 in Brazil as an English teaching assistant at a public university.
