Professor Albert Harris, Chair, called the Assembly to order at 3:05.
The minutes of the meetings of April 10 and September 17, 2001, were approved as distributed.
The Chair recognized Professor Roebuck, who moved, seconded by the Curriculum and Standards Committee, that the requirement of a minimum 2.0 grade point average outside the major be removed as a requirement for graduation, effective May 2002. Professor Roebuck clarified that this would leave the grade point average requirement as "a minimum of 2.0 overall and a minimum of 2.0 in the major, unless a higher standard is specified by the degree program."
Discussion included Professor Leichty.
Hearing no call for further discussion, the Chair put the question and the motion carried.
The Chair recognized Professor Wise who moved acceptance of the recommendation from the university-wide General Education Course Committee to remove computer literacy from the general education requirements and to charge each degree program to provide for appropriate computer literacy within the major. The motion was seconded.
Discussion included Professors Pfeffer, Wise, Cumbler, Dakan, and Roebuck.
Professor Pfeffer moved that the each degree program be charged to provide for appropriate "computer skills" rather than "computer literacy." The Assembly accepted this as a friendly amendment.
Hearing no call for further discussion, the Chair put the question and the motion carried as amended.
The Chair recognized Professor Dietrich who moved that the College adopt a plus/minus grading system (A+-F) in undergraduate courses, subject to any necessary approval from the Provost.
Discussion included Professors Covell, Hall, Pooser, Dakan, Wise, Cumbler, Leichty, Anderson, Golding, Byers, Leuthart, K'Meyer, and Weber.
Professor Weber moved to amend the motion by specifying that the change be effective in Summer 2002. The motion was seconded. Hearing no call for discussion, the Chair put the question to amend and the motion carried.
Professor Hall moved to amend the motion by stipulating that quality points be calculated according to the method used by the Graduate School. The motion was seconded.
Hearing no call for discussion on the amendment, the Chair put the question and the motion carried.
Continuing discussion included Professors Anderson, Henke, Weissbach, Cumbler, Chalmers, Calhoun, Maloney, Pooser, Byers, Hall, Pfeffer, Mullen, Golding, Theriot, Mastri, and Brown.
Professor Weissbach moved to amend the motion by specifying that the change apply to courses in which the A-F system is used. The motion was seconded.
Hearing no call for discussion of the amendment, the Chair put the question and the motion carried.
The Chair then read the motion as amended: "Effective Summer 2002, the College adopt the plus/minus grading system (A+ to F) in all undergraduate courses in which the A-F system is used and that the conversion of letter grades in calculation of the quality-point average follow the practice of the Graduate School."
Hearing no call for further discussion, the Chair put the question on the motion as amended. The motion carried.
The Chair then recognized Professor Wise for the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on the College Personnel Policy.
Professor Wise moved, and was seconded, that the Assembly move into Committee of the Whole. The motion carried.
The Committee of the Whole rose and the Chair reported that the Committee had discussed the proposal from the Ad Hoc Committee.
The Assembly recessed until 3:00 pm, Thursday, February 7.
