Committee Needs for AY2016-17
The Committee on Committees needs to fill the following upcoming vacancies for the 2016-17 academic year:

COLLEGE STANDING COMMITTEES:

  • Academic Discipline and Student Grievance: two SS representatives
  • Admissions and Appeals: One representative from each division and one at-large representative
  • Committee on Committees: One HUM representative and one SS representative
  • Curriculum: A Fall 2016 HUM sabbatical replacement and one SS representative
  • Faculty Salary: Two representatives from each division, one part-time lecturer, and one term faculty member
  • Personnel: One HUM representative and one NS representative
  • Planning and Budget: One NS representative
  • Research: One NS representative and one SS representative
  • Technology and Facilities: One NS representative and one SS representative

UNIVERSITY-WIDE COMMITTEES:

  • General Education Course Committee: One NS representative
  • Graduate Student Grievance: One at-large representative
  • Graduate Council: One HUM representative
  • Undergraduate Council: One NS representative

FACULTY SENATE:

  • 2 HUM representatives, one SS representative and one at-large representative

Please note that the College’s standing rules prevent a faculty member who was elected to serve a full term on a standing committee from serving consecutive terms on that committee.

Kudos & Congratulations

A&S student accepted into Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange
One of our A&S students, Brandt Coleman, has been accepted into the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program for Young Professionals. This highly competitive program only selects 75 participants each year nationwide. The program consists of three phases: intensive language study, studying at a German university and participation in an internship in Germany.

Awards and Grants

2016-2017 Paul Weber Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching - Stage 1 Application Deadline: Friday, April 8, 2016
This university-wide teaching award recognizes departmental excellence in teaching and each year one department will receive $30,000. The award is intended to provide genuine incentive for departments to review and assess the quality of teaching at all levels. The award is named in memory of the late Dr. Paul Weber, a distinguished teacher, scholar, and mentor at the University of Louisville. More information

DEADLINE MAR. 25: Spring Internal Grants Program
The Office of the EVPRI is accepting applications for the Internal Grants Program. The Internal Grants Program (Research I, Research II and URG) aims to assist faculty in new highly productive research projects. All grant categories are open to full-time faculty. Application forms are available online.

Prof. Julie Peteet (Anthropology) published "Wall Talk: Palestinian Graffiti" in Handbook of Graffiti and Street Art edited by J.I. Ross. Routledge.

Items of Note

The newly revised self-guided driving tour of Louisville's civil rights history developed by the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research was profiled in the Feb. 28 Courier-Journal to cap off African American History Month. The new tour brochure now includes the downtown civil rights trail markers sponsored by the A&S Dean's office. Among others who helped with it were the late Dean of A&S J. Blaine Hudson, Prof. Tracy K’Meyer (History), and Prof. Cate Fosl (Women’s & Gender Studies). It was published in partnership with the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau (401 W. Main St.) and the Louisville Visitors Center (301 S. Fourth St.); the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage (1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.); the Muhammad Ali Center (144 N. Sixth St.); and Kentucky Unbridled Spirit. Copies are available at those sites and from the ABI.

On March 7, Dionne Griffiths (Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research) was featured in Insider Louisville for the 3rd annual We Are Kentuckians: Celebrating Our Common Heritage, a production created by Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. The performance held on March 10, 2016, celebrated black women in Kentucky and Dionne recited original poetry about black female identity and African American culture and she choreographed and performed a contemporary dance solo. Dionne is the Program Coordinator for the ABI.

On Thursday, March 3, Dewey Clayton (Political Science) gave a telephone interview to WFPL reporter Ryland Barton regarding the upcoming Republican caucus on March 5, 2016 and the special House elections on March 8, 2016. Additionally, on Saturday, March 5, he appeared as a political analyst on CTV News Channel Canada on Face Time concerning the Kentucky presidential caucus and other primaries/caucuses held on Super Saturday.

Did you know?

In 1970, the University of Louisville entered the state university system as Kentucky’s second-largest public university.  This had a profound effect on the University and on A&S and, by the 1980s, A&S enrollment had almost doubled.
