UofL mourns loss of friend and supporter Muhammad Ali
Less than one year after bestowing one of its highest honors on Muhammad Ali, the University of Louisville is remembering him today for his support and love of his hometown university. For more on Ali’s relationship with UofL, visit Muhammad Ali was a champion for UofL.

Fine Arts alumni receive prestigious post-graduate positions
Alumna Elizabeth Driscoll Smith (MA in Art History, 2016; Advisor: Jongwoo Jeremy Kim) has received a curatorial internship at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Elizabeth currently holds the position of Research Assistant at the Speed Art Museum, where she was the Hite-Speed Fellow in 2015. Alumna Kajen Duvall (BA in Art History, 2016) will continue her education through a Master's program in Cultural Studies that focuses on visual art at the University of Leuven, Belgium, one of Europe's most historic and prestigious universities.

Prof. Hanchette, colleagues win poster presentation award
Prof. Carol Hanchette
(Geography and Geosciences), Prof. Carlee Lehna (School of Nursing) and Stephen Furmanek (School and Nursing) received two awards for their poster presentation at the American Burn Association 48th Annual Meeting. The poster title was "Using a Cartographic Risk Model to Inform a Fire Prevention Intervention for Families with Newborns.” The poster won first in section and second overall, with 338 posters total in the competition.

Prof. Chan exhibits at Artspace in Oklahoma City
Prof. Ying Kit Chan’s (Fine Arts) exhibition GeoEthics will run from May 26 to July 16 in Oklahoma City. The works selected for GeoEthics highlight Prof. Chan’s conceptual development and explore environmental ethics through three themes: oil spills, industrial landscapes, and philosophical thought.

Prof. Danovitch lectures in Colombia
Prof. Judith Danovitch (Psychological & Brain Sciences) gave a series of lectures and met with faculty and students at the Universidad de La Sabana in Chia, Colombia. A summary of Prof. Danovitch’s lectures (in Spanish) are posted on the university’s website.

Prof. Pfeffer presents at Iowa conference
Prof. Wendy Pfeffer (Classical & Modern Languages) presented "The Communities of Beatritz d'Armagnac (ca. 1364-post 1410)," at a conference held in honor of the retirement of Constance Berman from the History Department, University of Iowa. A recap of the conference, dubbed ConnieCon and updated on Twitter (#ConnieCon), has been posted to Storify.

Dean Leonard to skydive with Golden Knights
A&S Dean Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, along with more than a dozen University of Louisville staff members, will participate in a tandem jump with the Army’s elite Golden Knights skydiving team. Weather permitting, the jump is scheduled for June 9 at Fort Knox.

SCMPD captain graduates from prestigious program (WJCL-22, 6/1/16) – On the Southern Police Institute, and SCMPD Capt. Robert Gavin, who graduated from the Southern Police Institute (SPI) Administrative Officers Course (AOC). He was one of 45 officers to graduate from the 135th course on May 12. The law enforcement officers were from 37 agencies and 16 states.

Another A&S graduate earns Fulbright

Shacoya Kidwell

Shacoya Kidwell, who graduated in May from UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in English, earned a Fulbright Open Study/Research Award to Trinidad and Tobago to study local culture and the community, including the work of writer Earl Lovelace, author of “The Wine of Astonishment” and other texts. Kidwell is the ninth A&S student, out of 14 total, to earn a Fulbright this year.
