A&S alumna pens Washington Post article: “One-third of all U.S. presidents appointed a Supreme Court justice in an election year”
A&S Political Science alumna and 2014 Alumni Fellow Barbara Perry penned an article for The Washington Post on the historical record that supports President Barack Obama’s position to nominate a Supreme Court Justice during an election year. According to Perry’s research, 14 presidents have appointed 21 justices during presidential election years. A half-dozen presidents, classic lame ducks, filled Supreme Court seats even though their successors had been elected. Dr. Perry is the co-chair of the Miller Center Oral History Program and University of Virginia Associate Professor. She is a distinguished scholar of the U.S. Supreme Court and the American presidency and is viewed as an authority on the Kennedy Presidency. To read the full story, visit The Washington Post.
