Message from the Dean

Thank you to those who attended the first meeting of the A&S Assembly. It was a terrific turnout, and I hope you’ll participate in all the discussions this year. There is a lot to do, and we need your input. (PDF handout of lists below)

Our first activity is to respond to three questions posed by the Provost:

  1. What are the areas in which we are strong?
  2. What are the areas in which we are poised to become strong if we infused them with some resources?
  3. Where are there opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaborations within A&S or within the campus including A&S?

As a start, department chairs have identified these themes as capturing our strengths. If you have other or additional ideas, please share them with your chair.

  1. We are leaders in our respective disciplines, advancing basic research, creative endeavors, and making the world better.
  2. We are pushing disciplinary boundaries to advance products of interdisciplinary creativity.
  3. Our work reflects our commitments to social justice, global understanding, and a healthy world that can be sustained.
  4. Louisville is an engaging laboratory for our scholarship, and our aim is to grow as scholars and improve our region.
  5. Through excellence in teaching and engagement of our students, we provide the academic foundation in problem-solving, critical thinking, innovation and adaptability that leads to successful careers and rewarding lives; substantive expertise for teachers; and preparation for graduate and professional schools.

A very big thank you to those who participated in our important recruiting events over the weekend. Successful recruiting is one way in which we can continue to improve. The GEM activities are an excellent way to recruit to our STEM fields, and these are disciplines we need to entice more promising young women and students from minority groups to pursue. The Accolade showcase drew record numbers of high achieving students to our campus. It was a diverse group, and let’s hope many of them select UofL!

For the Chairs

  • As part of the SACS accreditation process, UofL needs to identify student learning outcomes in its educational programs, assess the extent to which outcomes are achieved, and provide evidence of developing improvement based on analysis of the results.  Institutional Effectiveness (IE) staff is coordinating the collection and review of the 2013-14 Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Annual Reports.  IE also has reviewed the 2012-13 SLO Annual Reports and provided detailed feedback to the majority of the department chairs/heads.  It is anticipated by the end of September all program chairs will receive their feedback reports.   The recommended changes identified in the 2012-13 SLO Feedback Reports should be reflected in the 2013-14 SLO Annual Reports.

    Please note the following:

    • Reports due to IE by Friday, November 7, 2014.
    • Email completed reports (WORD document template) to cheryl.gilchrist@louisville.edu
    • 100% submission of reports required for SACS compliance
    • IE staff will enter ALL reports into Compliance Assist, a comprehensive web-based assessment and reporting system
    • As part of the SACS accreditation: Undergraduate programs are requested to show progress towards meeting SACS requirement related to specific competencies in the major, General Education program, culminating undergraduate experience (CUE) and Ideas to Action (i2a); Graduate/Professional programs are requested to show progress towards meeting SACS requirement related to specific competencies in  content knowledge, research and/or professional practice.

The IE staff are available to meet directly with you if you need any assistance with the 2013-14 SLO Reports. Contact cheryl.gilchrist@louisville.edu to set up an appointment.
