Monday Memo April 29, 2019

Dean's Message

Dear Colleagues,

This is the last Monday Memo of AY19 and I write to thank you all for your devoted work to progressing our goals of educating future leaders, advancing new knowledge, and improving our world. This year we have made substantial achievements in all areas, so I look forward to sharing some of the cumulative highlights with you in my State of the College address early next Fall.

There will be a few staff changes in the Dean’s Office over the summer of which I wanted to make you aware. First off, please join me in thanking for her service Associate Dean Theresa Rajack-Talley, who is vacating her post June 30. While in the Dean’s Office, Theresa oversaw her staff in a number of important activities and projects. A few of those include the creation of a guidebook for our study abroad and international programs to facilitate faculty’s development of new courses; the tremendous growth in our longstanding monthly Yearlings Club series, three very successful economic summits; and the A&S community spirit awards. Her efforts in diversity contributed to the UofL diversity plan, which is a model for the state, and improved our hiring practices. She published an award-winning book during all of this too! Thanks, Theresa. We’ll miss you!

Until we know details of the new strategic plan and determine how best for A&S to align with it, this associate dean position will not be filled and I will assume responsibility for these areas. To provide faculty, staff, and students with some diversity training experiences, I have hired Professor Cynthia Ganote (Sociology) for a one-year appointment as an assistant dean to share with us her diversity training in university settings. Cynthia served as director of faculty development at her previous institution and with clients such as the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I hope you will look forward to these new opportunities and working with her next year.

Lastly, in order to assist Associate Dean Keeling with the many new challenges presented by Interfolio and Faculty180, I have hired Professor Susan Ryan (English) as a temporary Assistant Dean to get us through the initial implementation of these new university-wide software. Susan comes to the Faculty Affairs office with a host of administrative and leadership experiences, including serving on Personnel and Planning & Budget committees, as long-term Vice Chair, and as multiple stints as acting chair.

As the semester draws to a close, I hope that many of you will attend graduation ceremonies and share the joy of our accomplished students as President Bendapudi confers their degrees. For those of you pursuing research and study abroad this summer, please share photos as it is always a special treat to see the impact of Arts & Sciences in places such as Morocco, China, Ireland, Panama, Peru, Italy, Portugal and Crimea. As always, I promise to keep you posted on any important announcements that occur over the summer.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, Ph.D.
Dean

Green tip for faculty/staff leaving for summer

Before leaving campus for the summer, consider two actions to conserve and save: Make sure your office or lab won’t be wasting energy while you’re away; turn off lights, computers, and equipment, set thermostats to 80, shut windows tightly, and unplug everything possible: empty refrigerators, chargers, coffee makers, printers, and all non-essential equipment.
