Announcement 

Register now for new performance evaluation training 

Human Resources is introducing a more streamlined, concise performance evaluation form. The performance evaluation period also will transition from the calendar year to the fiscal year. All supervisors are encouraged to attend an upcoming training session for this new process as the form is quite different from past evaluation tools. Register online for a training session. Please contact Bridget Burke if you have any questions.

Spotlight on Star Students

Prof. Jafar Hadizadeh (Geography & Geosciences) describes Elliot Holmes as "highly driven," and his academic record proves it. After earning his undergraduate degree last semester and receiving glowing recommendations from his professors, Holmes was admitted into the Applied Geography graduate program and awarded a full research assistantship to work on an NSF-awarded research project.

After receiving the prestigious Woodcock Medal and graduating in May 2018, Tasneem Karim (BA, Anthropology) traveled to Morocco to study Arabic as a Critical Language scholar. A former undergraduate Brown Fellow and now Brown Foundation employee, Karim spends her free time volunteering for Dancing Well: The Soldier Project, which uses community dance to help vets with PTSD connect to the community.

Martinez selected as Conviron Scholar

Susana Perez Martinez, a Ph.D. student in the laboratory of Prof. Mark Running (Biology), has been named a Conviron Scholar by the American Society of Plant Biologists. She will join 24 other students around the world in participating in a series of educational programs and given opportunities to present her research to an international audience.

Nichols Professional Development Award applications open

A&S Student Council's Student Art Exhibition returns for its 12th year

Application deadline October 15th at 11:59 p.m

All students are highly encouraged to enter their creations to compete for awesome awards and prizes in painting, photography, mixed media, graphic design, drawing, sculpture/3D, poetry, and best overall. Communication class partners with Breeders' Cup

Students enrolled in COMM 510 (Public Relations and Crisis Communications) will be working with The Breeders' Cup, getting real world, hands-on experience for the upcoming races. Students will create social media content, formulate strategies, and work on influencer marketing initiatives. Official press release here.

Learn about about transdisciplinary social justice research projects in our community when faculty from 3 different Cooperative Consortium for Transdisciplinary Social Justice Research teams talk about their experiences doing social justice research on topics such as creating a community-owned grocery store, trauma-informed classroom management, and housing justice.

Malcolm X Debate Team continues to dominate

Congratulations to the Malcolm X Debate team for an outstanding  performance last week at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Deontrey Yeargin and Jahne Benthall won the prestigious, invite-only Val Browning Round Robin. They finished with an undefeated record of 9-0 and Yeargin was awarded 2nd place speaker. The Round Robin was followed by the Mukai College Classic where Yeargin and Benthall finished as semifinalists. Yeargin was named the top overall speaker and Benthall was 14th. Lastly, junior varsity debaters, Jerome Lyles and Saada Ridgeway, also finished as semifinalists and received 7th and 10th place speaker awards, respectively.

The 4th Annual Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence Annual Lecture presents Jeremy Dauber. In a rich account of Jewish humor, Dauber traces the origins of Jewish comedy and its development from biblical times to the age of Twitter, including the ways Jewish comedy was mirrored, and sometimes even shaped, through the course of Jewish history.
