Dean's Message: Update on Staff Reorganization

Dear Colleagues:

President Bendapudi joins us tonight at 5 p.m. for the kickoff for the A&S Yearlings Club monthly meetings at 4309 W. Broadway. If you haven’t yet been to a Yearlings Club meeting, I recommend coming tonight. It is a wonderful forum—always interesting and an opportunity to discuss issues that are of importance to West Louisville.

Switching gears, we are in the home stretch of our staff reorganization. It hasn’t been easy, as any change is difficult and a change that involves centralization of some tasks is especially challenging. The process has been delayed and more complicated than expected because of changes in CFO and COO, the evolution of central administration’s Business Ops, and multiple budget cuts imposed along the way. There have been communication difficulties across all levels, and some transparency was lost along the way as positions that might have been eliminated were re-assessed.

While I recognize that not everyone is happy with the proposed changes, the changes do accomplish what we’ve been tasked to do by the UofL Board of Trustees and the Strothman report. Additionally, I think we can take comfort in the fact that we can meet the goals set for us without reducing staff. HR still needs to review all of the revised JDFs, but only lateral changes or increased salaries and upgraded classifications are the expected outcome. I’m grateful to everyone who has carried on during the planning years, and especially the many people who have worked hard to devise plans that advance both personnel expertise and interests, while also helping to improve equity in workloads and overall efficiency.

Rest assured that we will greet 2019 with current JDFs and clear work expectations! Like you, I am eager to move on from reorganization to other priorities, most especially to professional development which I know is of major interest. I’ll likely have more to report at the State of the College and at our fall semester staff meeting. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for the annual A&S State of the College Address on 9/26, and feel free to contact me with ideas or concerns.

Thank you for your service to A&S and to UofL.

Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, Ph.D.
Dean
