Mandatory Flu Shots

This year, students, faculty, and staff who are coming to campus are required to receive a flu vaccination. As in years past, the University is providing these flu shots free of charge to all our students, faculty, and staff. To help decrease wait times at the vaccination sites, please complete and fill out the flu shot consent form ahead of your visit. (It’s under the Spotlight section on the Campus Health Services website.) We also encourage those who have not been coming to campus to receive the free shots, which will be available through Nov. 6 at the following locations and times (All sites are closed on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov, 3.):

Remote work recommended 11/25 - 12/18

The Dean’s Office recommended that staff work 100% remotely during the period of November 25 through December 18 to all supervisors. If your supervisor has determined that you can work remotely during this time or your current schedule allows you to work remotely, please remember that non-exempt staff must complete the Excel or PDF track hours template and send to your supervisor and CC the A&S HR Service Account. If you are working on campus, you do not need to complete the track hours template.

Menze and students publish in PNAS

Kudos to Prof. Michael Menze and graduate students Clinton Belott and Brett Janis on the publication of "Liquid-liquid phase separation promotes animal desiccation tolerance" in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), one of the world's most-cited and comprehensive multidisciplinary scientific journals. The team's findings "significantly advance our understanding of 'life without water' and promote transformative advancements in various fields, ranging from cell preservation technology to improvement of crop desiccation tolerance."

Meet the Professor - Andreas Elpidorou talks boredom, frustration

We experience boredom and frustration often. But what do those experiences mean? What can we do about our boredom? And how can we use our frustration? In this talk, Prof. Andreas Elpidorou (Philosophy) discusses the role of negative emotions in our life and argues that boredom and frustration, although both unpleasant emotions, can help us live a better and more fulfilling life. Gifford to be featured on The Academic Minute

Adjunct Professor Daniel Gifford (History) will be featured on NPR's The Academic Minute the week of November 2, 2020. Gifford will be talking about commemorating and memorializing dying industries, a topic explored in his recently published book, The Last Voyage of the Whaling Bark Progress (McFarland Press, 2020.

The Academic Minute -- which features a different professor each day - is broadcast on 70 stations around the US and Canada. This is the first time the University of Louisville has been a contributing institution to the program. Anti-Racism Agenda

14th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture with Loretta Ross

The 14th Annual (and first virtual) Anne Braden Memorial Lecture features legendary activist Loretta Ross, who will present "Calling In the Call Out Culture" on November 11 at 5:30 PM.

Loretta Ross is a longtime feminist, anti-racist leader with 45 years' experience in intersectional social movement-building, ranging from the National Anti-Klan Network to Sistersong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, which she co-founded.

Ross is a Visiting Associate Professor at Smith College in the Program for the Study of Women and Gender, where she teaches courses on white supremacy, human rights, and calling in the call out culture. Her passion transforms anger into social justice to change the world.

As always, this event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
