The spring 2015 semester is under way, and faculty, staff and students are already hard at work! There is already a lot to report. So be prepared; this week’s memo is a long one.

Science Reps Needed for Curriculum Committee

The Curriculum Committee needs two Natural Sciences representatives. Nominations are requested for a spring 2015 sabbatical replacement and a regular member who will serve from spring 2015 to spring 2016 to complete an outgoing member’s term. The Curriculum Committee meets on Fridays from 12 -1:30 p.m. this semester. If you are interested in serving or wish to nominate someone to serve, please contact Dwain C. Pruitt.

Nominations open for University Fellowships

The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) is accepting nominations for University Fellowships for the 2015-2016 academic year. Deadline for submission of nomination materials is February 2. For more information, visit the Fellowship webpage or email Cara McHugh.

Distinguished Faculty Awards

Please consider nominating a colleague for one of the Distinguished Faculty Awards. Nominations are due March 4 in the A&S Research Office (RM 320 Gardiner Hall). Guidelines are available for Teaching, Service and Scholarship/Research/Creative Activity nominations.

Olorunsola Endowed Research Award for Young Scholars

The College of Arts and Sciences is soliciting applications for the Victor Olorunsola Endowed Research Award. One award of $2,000 will be made in 2015. Applicants must be within their first four years as full-time, tenure-track assistant professors. The deadline for applications is March 2. Application information is available in Research Resources.

Funding opportunities to promote research and creative activities of faculty members are open. The deadline for applications is March 2. Guidelines and application forms are on the A&S Research Office website.

Prof. Jaffe featured on 101 Critical Theory Books of 2014

Prof. Aaron Jaffe’s book The Way Things Go: An Essay on the Matter of Second Modernism was published in December 2014 by the University of Minnesota Press. It was featured on Critical-Theory.com’s list of 101 Critical Theory Books from 2014.

Prof. Stanev’s book published in December

Prof. Hristomir Stanev’s new book Sensory Experience and the Metropolis on the Jacobean Stage (1603-1625) was published in December 2014 by Ashgate Publishing.

Prof. Fosl presenting at FSU’s “Road Scholars” series

Prof. Cate Fosl will be the first presenter at Florida State University’s spring 2015 “Road Scholars” lecture series. The series showcases distinguished scholars from opponent institutions in the ACC in conjunction with FSU home games against the scholar’s institution. Prof. Fosl’s January 23rd lecture at FSU is entitled, “Using Biography to Explain 20th Century Social Movements,” and will coincide with our women's basketball game vs. FSU on January 22nd.

Prof. Rhodes featured in Speed Museum production

In conjunction with its exhibition REMIX: Stephen Paul Day | Sibylle Peretti | The Leight Collection, The Speed Museum has produced a video featuring Arts & Sciences Fine Arts Prof. Ché Rhodes in which he introduces the process of glassmaking.

Prof. Omer-Sherman to Chair Jewish Studies Conference

Prof. Ranen Omer-Sherman, Humanities, was invited to serve as Division Chair for Israel Studies for the annual conference of the Association of Jewish Studies for a three-year term (2015-2017).

Prof. Humberto Gutierrez receives NSF CAREER grant

Prof. Humberto Gutierrez was awarded the NSF CAREER grant (award amount: $492, 412).  Prof. Gutierrez proposes to explore Two-Dimensional Heterostructures Based on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides with the purpose of improving their optoelectronic properties. His proposal will focus on innovative design principles, synthesis, and band gap engineering via doping and alloying effects of these two-dimensional materials.

Online Criminal Justice program ranks 13th in nation

UofL’s online Criminal Justice Graduate Program tied for 13th in the nation in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. The rankings are based on factors such as admissions selectivity, faculty credentials and academic and career support services offered to students.

The Linguistics in Humanities MA Program

The Fall 2014 rankings of Top Linguistics Graduate Programs in the country, according to graduateprograms.com, were recently released. Among Linguistics graduate programs, UofL’s Linguistics program ranked third in the United States, with Stanford and MIT ranking first and second respectively.

UofL Quiz Bowl Team sweeps tournament

The UofL Quiz Bowl team performed very well at the Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League tournament December 6. UofL swept both divisions, with the Division I team posting an 8-0 record and the Division II team posting a 7-0 record. The team is coached by Matt Church, A&S Advising, and Eddie Bobbitt, A&S Advising.

  • Division I team: Jacob Graham (Psychology), Ramapriya Rangaraju (Computer Engineering and Computer Science), and Amos Zoeller (Bioengineering). Rampriya Rangaraju was the leading scorer for the tournament with 90 points per game on average.
  • Division II team: Max Brown (History), Clayton Truman (Chemical Engineering), and Jacob Wollam (Middle and Secondary Education). Clayton Truman had 80.71 points per game on average, the highest among all Division II Players and the third highest for the entire tournament.

UofL Alum chosen to design 2015 Kentucky Derby poster

Hite Art Institute alumna Karen Boone, BA in Art with honors ’83, has been named the designer for the 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Poster. Boone’s selection was also announced in Insider Louisville (Derby Festival names Karen Boone as 2015 poster designer).

Luncheon lectures offer taste of professors’ interests

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Liberal Studies Project offer the monthly Meet the Professor series to highlight the college's research and cultural offerings. The Thursday luncheon talks begin at noon in the University Club. Reservations are required, with $14 payment in cash or check. To reserve a spot, contact Janna Tajibaeva at 502-852-2247 or janna@louisville.edu no later than the Monday before each event.

Call for International, Diversity and Engagement interns

The College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office for International, Diversity and Engagement Programs is currently recruiting interns. The Inclusion and Equity Internship program is designed to expose students to the scholarship and best practices concerning greater inclusiveness and equity, with the purpose of cultivating social justice leadership skills among college students. Graduate Student Intramural Research and Creative Activities Grants

Annual Martin Luther King Day celebration

Student actors from the Theatre Arts Department will perform “The Meeting,” a fictional take on Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, as part of the department’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebration. There also will be an appearance by the Kentucky Center ArtsReach Dance Ensemble and a performance from local singer Erica Denise Bledsaw & Friends. Professor Ricky Jones will moderate a forum. Sponsored by the African American Theatre Program (AATP), the celebration will be held 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19 at The Playhouse, 1911 S. Third Street.

‘Beer with a Scientist’ to feature Prof. Dugatkin

Prof. Lee Dugatkin, Biology, will discuss "The evolution of goodness and justice: Why it pays to be nice," on Wednesday, January 14 at 8pm at Against the Grain Brewery. Prof. Dugatkin will discuss how altruism, goodness and justice fit with the idea of “survival of the fittest” (or to put it another way, if the strongest survives, then why do organisms work together and why is there goodness and justice in the world around us?). Authors Announced for Spring Axton Series

The lineup for the 2014-15 Axton Reading Series has been announced, and it includes author Sayed Kashua and Kentucky poet Laureate Frank X. Walker. The Series brings highly distinguished writers from across the country to the University of Louisville for two-day visits to read from their work, and to share their knowledge and expertise with the University and Louisville community. More information about the series, this year’s presenting authors and the public readings is available through UofL’s English Department.
