Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

I have heard from many of you that you appreciate the Monday Memo and the recognition it affords our wonderful faculty and staff in A&S. It has been such a success that we are finding we are getting more material than we can handle in any given week! To make sure the Memo remains useful, we are going to have to limit some material.

  • We will announce events, but we draw from events that are open to the public from the University calendar Localist, so please submit your events to that site. Once in the calendar, they will automatically be included in the Upcoming Events section of the Memo. For event announcements, we’ll likely note them for only a couple of weeks.
  • We want to highlight noteworthy achievements, so please send us information about your successes with publications, exhibitions, performances, grants, awards, and leadership roles. Given the number of conference presentations, we are not going to list these any longer unless they are keynote addresses or special invitations.

If you have a question about whether or not something should be submitted, feel free to send an email to asadvance@louisville.edu.

Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kempf-Leonard

Dean

Teaching/Instruction & Research/Creative Activity

  • The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) will release the majority of the online course evaluations for fall 2014 on November 11-12. Evaluations will remain open through reading day December 9. Please encourage students to complete the evaluations. You can help increase student response rates by announcing that evaluations are open, allowing class time to complete evaluations, and letting students know their feedback is important and that the results are confidential. As an added incentive, students completing their evaluations will be entered into a drawing to win one of two MacBook Air laptops, which will be awarded December 10. More details are forthcoming.
  • The Fulbright Scholar Program is looking for programs and institutions who would like to participate in the Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF). The OLF provides funding for higher education institutions to host Fulbright Visiting Scholars in the United States for short term lectureships of 2-3 days at campuses that are at least 75 miles from their primary host institution. Fulbright Visiting Scholars conduct research and teaching from all disciplines and hail from 155 countries.  To view a list of approximately 900+ scholars, please view the OLF scholar directory. If you are interested in hosting a guest speaker, fill out the one page application found on their website.
  • Faculty Development Opportunity: “Motivation Demystified: Steps We All Can Take to Improve Student Motivation” Psychology Professor Kenn Barron, Co-Director of the Motivation Research Institute at James Madison University, will offer a one-hour presentation about his research on motivation and learning. Friday, Nov. 21; 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. For more information and to register
  • Book-in-Common essay contest: Faculty encouraged to assign essays. First Year Initiatives is once again teaming up with i2a to sponsor the Book-in-Common essay contest for first-year and upper-class students based on this year’s text, “This I Believe.” Faculty are encouraged to assign “This I Believe” essays for credit or extra credit in their undergraduate courses and to promote the contest to students. The top first-year prize is a $350 scholarship and the top upper-class prize is a $100 scholarship. Essay contest deadline: Dec 3. Additional Information or email Christy Metzger.
  • A&S is down to 381 courses without syllabi correctly posted in Blackboard.  We investigated why syllabi don't show up when faculty have actually posted a syllabus; the problem is either that the syllabus was not posted as a file or that it was not named correctly. Download this PDF to see the status of your syllabi posting
