Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks for all the initial work to the faculty who have contributed to the list of perceived research strengths in Arts & Sciences. These conversations are all part of a process that will be ongoing, so don’t worry if you haven’t been involved yet. I do hope all departments are having conversations though.

The initial list of areas and topics came from suggestions by department chairs, and it has grown. We all recognize there are individual faculty whose noteworthy achievements are distinctive, important, but not captured in a list initially intended to cover areas in which multiple faculty members work. We want to know about prominent scholars who work in independent areas too. Next, we’ll be identifying departments and faculty associated with the respective areas. We hope to hear from a few more departments over the next week. Then, we’ll send the list out again for additional input.

Today, I’m in Lexington meeting with other science deans from Kentucky institutions on a variety of issues, but mostly about ways in which to increase the presence of minorities and women in the STEM fields. If you have creative ideas on this topic, please send them to me. We want to do better.

Later in the week, I’m meeting with Arts & Sciences deans from across the country on all sort of topics. I’m eager to soak up the lessons, and implement best practices here. I’ll also be sure to brag about you all while I’m there!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kempf-Leonard

Dean

Teaching/Instruction & Research/Creative Activity

  • Instructors for spring term courses must order textbooks as soon as possible. Textbook adoptions must be entered through the FacultyEnlight website. Download a guide to using the site.  Please be aware that the Belknap book orders go through www.louisville.bkstore.com.

  • In 2013, the artist Judy Chicago donated the International Honor Quilt to UofL with the understanding that the University would use this unique collection of art to spark study and curriculum across disciplines. To introduce the UofL community to this resource and stimulate discussion regarding possible uses of the quilts across disciplines, the Fine Arts department invites faculty to attend a brief presentation followed by a viewing of the quilts on Wednesday, November 12 in the Hite Galleries in Schneider Hall. There will be two separate sessions: one at 2 p.m. and one at 4:00 p.m.in the. Please make plans to discover this beautiful and provocative collection. A&S In the News

  • Data center offers insights for visiting journalists – Twenty journalists from all over the world visited UofL Oct. 31 to get a pre-election snapshot of Kentucky from the Kentucky State Data Center. Kentucky was a destination because of the close U.S. Senate race between Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes. The center director Matt Ruther, Asst. Prof. of Urban and Public Affairs, told journalists about Kentucky’s social, economic and demographic makeup. The Kentucky State Data Center, within A&S’s Urban Studies Institute, is the state’s clearinghouse for census information. Full story

    Congratulations and Kudos

    • Kudos to Asst. Profs. Daniel Vivian and Lara Kelland, Department of History, for coordinating a successful “Public History Job Search: A One-Day Workshop for Graduate Students"  On October 24, the public history programs at UofL, IU-Purdue, and Northern Kentucky University hosted a workshop intended for students who will soon be on the job market and recent grads that are still searching for positions or interested in career advancement. The workshop was also of interest to undergrads considering careers in public history. Overall, the day gave students a good sense of what skills are in demand, what employers look for, how to apply for jobs, and how to prepare for interviews. Full story and photos
    • The Department of Justice Administration’s graduate program was ranked 14th in the country by students in a survey conducted by graduateprograms.com. Graduateprograms.com reaches current and recent graduate students through scholarship entries as well as social media platforms. They assign 15 ranking categories to each graduate program at each graduate school. Program rankings, compiled using data gathered between September 1, 2012 and September 30, 2014, encompass reviews posted by more than 70,000 students participating in over 1,600 graduate programs nationwide.  More information
