A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee Minutes Oct 8 2002

Minutes: A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee

October 8, 2002

Members present: Ying Kit Chan, Susan DeWitt, Julia Dietrich (ex officio), Stuart Esrock, Carol Mattingly, Thomas Riedel (Chair), Nat Schwartz

Guests: Dean James Brennan, Professor Nancy Theriot

The meeting was convened at 12:05 p.m.

Nancy Theriot appeared before the committee to present information bearing on the discussion of budget cutting in the College. She noted that due to the new General Education requirements, fewer faculty would be needed to teach required courses in History, Philosophy, and perhaps English.

Dean Brennan then explained the current budget situation to the Committee. While discussing a set of possible budget scenarios, he pointed out that no final decisions had yet been made. While he was hopeful that the College would be able to minimize the short term affects of likely budget cuts, that it would still be necessary to prepare for permanent cuts over time.

The Committee then discussed possible regular meeting times and decided that Mondays at 4 p.m. were the best available times, excepting those meetings that would conflict with Chairs Meetings.

The Committee then returned to the discussion, started in the Committee's last meeting, of a motion on faculty service commitments and release time. Prof. Mattingly expressed the concern that the motion did not specify adequately how to evaluate the work accomplished with a course release. After discussion, the motion was amended to include language to clarify the evaluation of work performed with a course release. The motion was then adopted.

There was agreement that the next meeting would be on October 28 at 4 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
