Minutes: A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee

November 25, 2002

Members present: Ying Kit Chan, Julia Dietrich (ex officio), Stuart Esrock, Carol Mattingly, Thomas Riedel (chair), Nat Schwartz

The meeting was convened at 4:00 P.M.

Minutes of the November 18 meeting were adopted.

Thomas Riedel distributed copies of a draft memo to the Dean outlining the committee's proposal for budget savings. The committee continued to discuss the various ways to institute savings. Several ideas were discussed including starting a capital campaign; using alternatives to services such as printing and IT; redesigning general education courses to make them less costy and proposing a change in the charging of full-time tuition. Thomas Riedel will incorporate all these additional suggestions in the memo to Dean Brennan. A draft of this memo will be circulated among members via e-mail before submission to the Dean.

Next, the proposal of the new program of LoDi Certificate was discussed. Thomas Riedel explained that the college's contribution to this program will be limited to one course and the cost of this course will be reimbursed. The committee resolved to approve this program subject to the fact that all costs will be covered externally.

The committee then discussed the proposal of an MA program in Women's Studies. There were several unclear entries in the proposal that needed explanation. Thomas Riedel will draft a memo to Nancy Theriot addressing the committee's questions. Nancy Theriot will be invited to the next committee meeting to answer these questions in person.

The committee will meet again on Monday, December 9, at 4:00 P.M. The meeting adjourned at 5:10 P.M.
