November 2, 2005

Members present: A. Allen, B. Beattie (Chair), K. Chandler, P. Eason, M. Lorenz (A&S Student Council), S. Parkhurst, M. Rohmann, D. Swanson, R. Taylor

Guests: Dean Hudson, C. Leuthart (Geog/Geos)

The minutes of the meeting of October 26 were approved as distributed.

The committee discussed questions raised by the proposals for minors in Russian and in Jewish Studies with Dean Hudson.

The minor in Jewish Studies was approved.

The committee found the proposed minor in Russian to resemble more a minor in Russian Studies and will discuss it further with the department. At the dean’s suggestion, it will also be referred to the Planning and Budget Committee.

Dr. Leuthart and the committee discussed proposals for changes to the degree programs in Geography. GEOG 300 was added to the core requirements in the department, as was GEOG 256, which replaces the current supporting requirement of MATH 109 and 190. Additionally six hours of social sciences electives were removed from supporting courses, and those hours will be added to free electives. Six hours of electives in social sciences at the 300-level or above, outside the Department of Geography, remains as a supporting requirement. There were no changes to the department’s minor programs.

The following course actions were approved, effective Summer 2006. Graduate courses must also be approved in the Graduate School, and General Education courses must be approved by the General Education Course Committee.
