A&S; Curriculum Committee Minutes, 11/19/98

Professor Maloney called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.

The minutes of October 8 were corrected to show that both HIST 322: History of the Civil Rights Movement and HIST 323: History of the Family were approved for cross-cultural GER. The minutes were then approved as corrected.

The committee approved a recommendation from the Department of Chemistry to grant 3 hours credit to students who have successfully completed the International Baccalaureate examination (Higher Level) with a score of 5 or higher in Chemistry. Students will receive credit for CHEM 201.

The committee approved a level change for HUM 231/WMST 203: Humanities Perspectives on Sex Roles (to HUM 331/WMST 303) and approved the courses for cross-cultural GER.

The committee and Professors Wise and Adams discussed the Humanities program's proposed changes to HUM 300, 301, 303, 304, and 384. The changes would remove the condition that students might not earn credit for both the HUM courses and specific history courses.

The following changes were approved, effective 99U:

HUM 300: Culture of the Ancient Near East (title/description change; historical studies GER deleted; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 345 deleted) (5 for; 1 opposed)

HUM 301: Greek and Roman Culture (title/description change; historical studies GER deleted; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 346 deleted) (4 for; 2 opposed)

HUM 302: Medieval Culture (historical studies GER deleted)

HUM 303: Renaissance Culture (title/description change; historical studies GER deleted; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 354 deleted) (4 for; 2 opposed)

HUM 304: Modern Culture (description change; historical studies GER deleted; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 384 deleted) (4 for; 2 opposed)

HUM 307: Far Eastern Cultures (description change; historical studies GER deleted; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 396 deleted)

HUM 380: Ibero-Latin American Culture (title/description change; statement that credit not be received for this course and HIST 335 or SPAN 331 deleted) (5 for; 1 opposed)

HUM 384: Modern African Cultures (title/description change; statement that credit not received for this course and HIST 392 deleted) (4 for; 2 opposed)
