CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

OCTOBER 8, 1998

Professor Maloney called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m.

The minutes of the meeting of October 1, 1998, were approved as distributed.

The committee and Professors Badru and Hudson discussed the submission of PAS 520 for the WR requirement. The course was approved for WR credit, retroactive to this semester.

The committee discussed the criteria for general education cross-cultural courses. The following courses were approved, effective 99S:

HIST 309: Europe 1800-Present
HIST 322: History of the Family
HIST 355: European Ideas and Ideologies
HIST 362: U.S. and the Middle East
HIST 366: English History: Tudor Age to Welfare State
HIST 367: British Imperialism
HIST 381 Europe in the Nineteenth Century
HIST 382: Europe in the Twentieth Century
HIST 384: Modern Culture
HIST 386: Modern Germany, 1848-1945
HIST 387: The Holocaust and the Western Imagination
HIST 547: Studies in Russian History
HIST 560: The Great War, 1914-1918
HIST 563: The Middle Eastern Wars II
HIST 577: French Revolution and Napoleon
HIST 578: Studies in European History
HIST 579: History of European Ideas
HIST 582: Contemporary Europe since 1945

The following course actions were approved:

With the concurrence of the HPES department, the cross list between BIOL 263: Environmental Biology and HPES 263 was deleted, effective 99U.

WMST 414/SOC 456: Women and Work were cross-listed, effective 99U.
WMST 313/SOC 327: Sociology of Gender were cross-listed, effective 99U.

ENGL 304: Creative Nonfiction was added to the course inventory, effective 99F.

The committee discussed a series of proposals from the Division of Humanities. The following were approved, effective 99U:

HUM 302: Medieval Culture-description change
HUM 305: American Culture in the 20th Century-title/description change
HUM 307: Far Eastern Cultures-description change and cross-cultural GER
HUM 318: Judaism and Western Civilization-title/description change
HUM 376: Studies in American Culture-description change
HUM 593: Perspectives on Early Modern Culture-description change
HUM 334: Human Rights and Religious Traditions-deleted
HUM 336: Contemporary Christian Ethics-deleted
HUM 392: Personal Identity in Western Culture-deleted
HUM 382: Native American Cultures-added to the course inv

Action was deferred on the following courses: HUM 300, 301, 303, 304, and 384. The new descriptions would have removed the stipulation that credit could not be earned for both these courses and certain History courses, and the committee wished to involve the Department of History in these changes prior to final action. Action on a description change to HUM 380 was deferred for consultation with the Department of Classical and Modern Languages about similar restrictions.

Action on the addition of a portfolio and a seminar presentation requirement for the Humanities major was deferred until the proposal could be circulated to the faculty of the entire division.

The committee adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
