CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES

December 10, 1996

Members present: R. Kimball, H. Miller, J. Morrill, J. Morrison, M. Rohmann, R. Sahoo, E. Segal, R. Taylor

Guests: M. Jacobson (MATH); B. Jones (ADMISSIONS); R. Miller (WRITING CENTER); K. Mullen (IESL); M. Wenger (SOC)

Professor Morrill called the meeting to order at 9:05.          

The minutes of the meetings of November 12, 19, and 26, 1996, were approved as 
distributed.            

The committee agreed to schedule 97S meetings for Wednesdays, 2:00-3:30.

The committee approved the following courses for WR credit:
        SOC 371:  Alienation (effective 97U)    
        SOC 454:  Social Stratification (effective 97S) 
        SOC 464:  Race and Ethnicity (effective 97U)

The committee approved the Department of Mathematics' request to add a 
one-hour laboratory meeting to MATH 102:  Intermediate Algebra, effective 
97F.  The additional meeting will be used to implement uniform testing.  There 
will be no change in the number of credits awarded for the course.  

The remainder of the meeting was devoted to discussion of Professor Mullen's 
proposal that the English Placement test be removed as an option for 
determining English proficiency for the purpose of admission of international 
students.  Representatives of the Office of Admissions and of the Writing 
Center participated.  The committee deferred a decision until it could  review 
the various issues raised.  

The meeting adjourned at 10:30.
