Dr. Joy Carew is author of Blacks, Reds, and Russians: Sojourners in Search of the Soviet Promise (Rutgers Univ. Press, 2008)

Carew Book coverDescription of book:

This is an account of the expectations and experiences of African Americans and other Blacks who left the U.S. to explore the Soviet Experiment in the 1920s and the 1930s.  It draws from rarely seen autobiographies, archival materials,  interviews of descendants, and other historical accounts to broaden our knowledge about the global African diaspora and the factors which compelled peoples to make dramatic moves towards reshaping their futures.
