Susan Matarese, Professor of Political Science, and Paul Salmon, Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences, explore factors that set Shaker health practices apart from those of the broader society in the USA. The Shakers were one of America's most enduring utopian societies, spanning more than 200 years of American history. A millenialist sect that sought to create “heaven on earth,” the Shakers lived long and healthy lives in communities stretching from New England to Kentucky. What can the modern world learn from them?
