The New Top Guns: Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, and the Professional-Managerial Hero
with Professor Tom Byers
During the most recent Oscar season, Zero Dark Thirty and Argo became focal points for controversy about recent U.S. policies in the war on terror. But setting that issue on the back burner, Tom Byers, Professor of English and Director of Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society, looks at some basic similarities in the protagonists of these two films, to try to answer the following questions: Who is the new American hero, and exactly what kinds of things does (s)he actually do? How is (s)he like, and how unlike, older American heroes? What does the fact that these heroes are professionals from the ranks of middle management say about our time?
