Professor Jasmine Farrier: "Rethinking the Place of Congress in the 21st Century"

Jasmine Farrier, Professor of Political Science, will talk about how the stature of Congress has diminished considerably over the last century. Presidents and presidential elections now occupy the center of US political culture. But Congress still holds substantial power over any president in its broad capacities for representation, deliberation, legislation, and oversight. At a time of record low levels of popularity and trust, members and leaders of the House and Senate, as well as their constituents, should examine Congress’s contributions to its own demise, and consider how to reestablish its constitutional place for the good of the entire polity.
