One of the greatest landmarks in medical history involved the application of geography to the study of infectious deceases. Dr. John Snow is famous for his 1854 map of cholera cases in the Soho District of London. His medical detective-work helped put the miasma theory to rest and proved cholera to be a waterborne disease. Today’s geographic approaches and technologies make it possible to carry out an analysis such as Snow’s in a much shorter time. Carol Hanchette, Professor of Geography, will discuss the role of mapping and spatial analysis in her own research, using prostate cancer, lead poisoning, asthma and ovarian cancer as examples.
