Dept of Physics and Astronomy Emergency Plan
(FLU) CONTINGENCY PLAN - PHYSICS & ASTRONOMY
This plan covers only the Fall semester of 2009. It must be updated for the change in department chair in January, 2010.
General Precautions being taken:
The Department of Physics & Astronomy has placed hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and tissues in all instructional labs, the Physics
Learning Center, and the large lecture hall, NS 112. Teaching Assistants in labs are being encouraged to disinfect commonly handled equipment
before the start of each lab. Individuals who become ill are encouraged to stay home and to phone the departmental office to report any missed days and to relay instructions or requests for posting information. Faculty and teaching staff are being encouraged to use Blackboard to communicate with students.
CHAIR: If Brown is sick but not incapacitated, he will inform the office staff in the Department and will broadcast an email with the information to the departmental faculty listserv. He will also notify the Dean's office. In this case, Brown can be reached via email at D.N.Brown@louisville.edu or by phone at his home or cell numbers (on file in the Departmental office).
Brown or Brown's family will call the departmental office if Brown becomes incapacitated. If attempts to contact Brown by phone or email
have failed for 2 hours of concerted effort, Brown should be considered incapacitated. Department staff should notify the Dean's office if Brown
becomes incapacitated.
If Brown becomes incapacitated, departmental authority will shift to Chair-elect Dr. Chakram Jayanthi, if she is in town. If she is out of town
or herself incapacitated, departmental authority will shift to Graduate Program Director, Dr. Chris Davis.
Beyond Dr. Davis, the line of succession proceeds according to seniority within the departmental faculty (based on appointment date in the College):
France, Kielkopf, Wu, Morrison, Liu, Sumanasekera, Hoston, Tang/Williger, Mendes, Lauroesch/Yu, and Dowling/MacCall.
Return to duty at any time by a previously incapacitated individual returns departmental authority to the highest level available in the line of
succession.
UBM: If Pam Watson becomes ill, she will phone the departmental office and the chair directly to report. Mary Gayle Wrocklage will assume the most urgent payroll- and procard-related duties of the UBM, and will be responsible for oversight of the office. In the case that both Pam and Mary Gayle are sick, office oversight will be handled by the acting chair. If the UBM is out of the office for 3 weeks, or if two or more office staff members are out for 2 weeks, temporary skilled workers may be requested from HR.
COMPUTING: Oliver Hyams is responsible for the Department's website. In case of emergency requiring posting to the departmental web page, he should be notified, with copies to the chair, Dr. Brown, and Dr. Jim Lauroesch. Brown and Lauroesch can act as backups for Hyams if he becomes ill.
