Chemistry H1N1 Flu Emergency Plan

September 25, 2009

How can the Department operate when key administrators and support staff may be "out?" List who would serve as “back up” to the department chair or program director in the event you are ill.  If that person is ill, who would be “third in line?”

Dr Craig Grapperhaus will serve as backup in case Dr. Pack is out.  In the event that Dr Grapperhaus is also out, Dr. Richard Baldwin will be next in line.

How can we maintain efficient communications with one another when some or all of us are "off-campus?"

Dr. Pack – Office 852-6798

Dr. Grapperhaus – Office 852-5932

Dr. Baldwin – Office 852-5892

Home and cell phone numbers for these individuals have been provided to the A&S Dean’s Office.

How would your department/unit function if the chair/director, UBM or other key persons were out?

If the department chair is “home with the flu,” he will be contacted by office staff and kept informed and retain his responsibilities.  The next in line would have signatory authority.  If the chair is incapacitated, decision authority will pass to the next in line.

If the UBM, Ms. Susan Dewitt, is “home with the flu,” Sherry Nalley would be next in line. If Sherry Nalley is out, Betsy Faulkner would be next in line.

Susan Dewitt – Office 852-8150

Sherry Nalley – Office 852-8147

Betsy Faulkner – Office 852-8146

Home and cell phone numbers for these individuals have been provided to the A&S Dean’s Office.

How would you handle classes when the instructor may be "out" for an extended period?

If an instructor is “out”, her responsibilities will be covered as determined by the specific conditions.  Instructors have proposed a variety of ways to meet instructional demands, depending on the size of the class, its balance of lecture and discussion, and the percentage of the grade for participation: Some will use Tegrity and post lectures, some will use Blackboard to post lecture notes and engage in discussion sessions.  In some cases another faculty member will cover the lectures.

Department website

The person responsible for maintaining the departmental web site is Susan Dewitt.  If she is “out,” critical information will be posted by Professor Hunter Moseley (852-3168 or hnmose01@gwise.louisville.edu).
