Dept of Anthropology Emergency Plan
FLU/EMERGENCY PLAN
Anthropology Department
CHAIR: In the event the Chair is unavailable due to illness, Prof. Parkhurst will provide back-up. Third in line would be Prof. Jones. E-mails will be sent to all faculty informing them that Prof. Parkhurst or Prof. Jones is the acting chair. This will ensure that the Department is able to continue functioning fairly smoothly.
STAFF: Our two staff positions will provide back-up for each other. We think one staff has already had swine flu and thus has some immunities. An absence of a few days should not unduly effect departmental operations.
COMMUNICATIONS: All faculty have access to e-mail at home; we all have each others’ phone numbers. This should ensure smooth communication between faculty and the department.
INSTRUCTORS’ ABSENCE: Standard operating procedure in Anthropology is that anyone who is ill and unable to come to work must call the chair. This will continue. Instructors have proposed a variety of ways to meet instructional demands, depending on the size of the class, its balance of lecture and discussion, and the percentage of the grade for participation:
- Some will use Tegrity and post lectures
- Some will use Blackboard to post lecture notes and engage in discussion sessions
- Anthropology has a series of films we use in each sub-section of the discipline; these can be used, where relevant to the course material, to cover one or two absences.
If the unlikely event that an instructor is absent for an extended period of time, other faculty can present guest lectures in their classes.
STUDENT ABSENCES:
We have already implemented some flexibility in class attendance. For example, where reading quizzes are given every class session, faculty are allowing students to make-up the missed quizzes. We have asked students to find a “buddy” or two from who they can borrow notes in case of an absence. Faculty who in the past required a doctor’s note from an assent student are no longer doing so. We will be more flexible in allowing for make-up exams and late papers.
UBM:
Sharon O’Bryan . In the event of her illness Paula Huffman, an administrative assistant, can serve as back-up. In the event Paula is ill, Sharon can serve as back-up.
Web-Site: Prof. Haws is web master. Philip DiBlasi will provide back-up for the website.
