The Saturday Academy
"Those who do not know themselves cannot value themselves - and those who are not known by others cannot be valued by others." - Dr. Blaine Hudson, 1991
In today’s world, a Black person can pass through life without ever learning about his/her history and culture; and Whites and others can pass their entire lives without learning about the history of their Black fellow citizens.
But where might this knowledge be found? In schools and colleges that don’t teach Black history? In the church? On television? In the movies? On the street?
At The Saturday Academy we can learn together!
About The Saturday Academy
The Saturday Academy is a community outreach initiative of the College of Arts & Sciences (University of Louisville) in collaboration with the Jefferson County Public Schools, Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, the Kentucky African American Heritage Foundation, the Louisville Urban League and the University of Louisville Signature Partnership Initiative.
The Past
The Saturday Academy was developed in 1990 as a community-based cultural enrichment program focusing on African World history and culture. The Academy targeted adults no longer “in school” and complemented the newly devised Jefferson County Public School's “African American Studies” course and the work of the Pan-African Studies Institute for Teachers at the University of Louisville. It ran from 1991 through 2002.
The Present
The Saturday Academy re-opened in February 2006 and meets regularly on Saturdays from 11:00 am— 2:00 pm at the DuValle Education Center. Special sessions are held on other days or at other sites throughout the community by request.
Each Saturday the Academy offers a new and interesting program:
The “African World/Black History Seminar” explores the histories & cultures of Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, Latin America, and Black America from 1l:00am to 12:30pm. The primary seminar leader is Dr. Blaine Hudson.
The “African World Interest Groups” consists of community presentations on a broad range of topics, featuring guest presenters from 12:45pm to 2:00pm.
The Future
Our goal is to “grow” the Saturday Academy into a permanent community-based Institute for the Study and Preservation of African World History and Culture. Your presence on Saturdays helps demonstrates the need and interest and will help make this a reality.
