It is an axiom of Ecology that "there's no such thing as a free lunch." We have been stealing our lunch. It would be bad enough if we had stolen it only from the orangutans and the Atlantic cod. But we have stolen it also from other people. Normally, we ought to redress theft: if I steal your bike I have to give it back to you. But the flow of stolen lunches has been so thoroughly woven into our lives that it is not clear how we will give it up. Where do we go from here? This is a technical question, but it is first and foremost a question of justice.
