Apply for your Major or Minor

 

Before applying for your major please review the requirements for admission to your major and the steps in choosing a major.

You may also choose to attend a workshop with the Career Development Center.
After you have read through the following requirements, please scroll down to apply.

Most Arts & Sciences majors require that you have an established GPA at the University of Louisville to be admitted to your major.

To be in good academic standing in Arts & Sciences you must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA .

See the requirements listed below and in the online catalog for further information.

 

Anthropology

2.0 Overall GPA

 

Art (B.A. and B.F.A.), Art History (B.A.)

Admission is selective. Please consult the Department of Fine Arts web site for details.  Students must submit an application and a portfolio to the Art Department in order to take studio arts courses (except in special situations).

Tips: You may take Art History 250, 270 or 290 to cover both the Art B.A. and the general education Art requirement prior to admission to the Art Department.  This is not required prior to admission.

 

Biology

For students admitted to UofL starting in the Fall 2010 semester the following requirements apply:

1. Completion of Biol 240, 242 and 244 (or equivalent courses taken at another institution) with a grade of "C" or better;

2. Completion of Math 111 (or an equivalent course) with a grade of "C" or better OR placement into a mathematics course above the level of Math 111 on the basis of either the University mathematics placement examination or ACT/SAT score; and

3. An overall grade point average of at least 2.0.

 

 

Classical and Modern Languages

2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major

 

Communication

B.A.: 2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major, must have completed Comm 201 or above at UofL with a grade of "C" or higher

B.S.: 2.5 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major, must have completed Comm 201 or above at UofL with a grade of "C" or higher

 

English

Completion of English 101 and 102, or 105 (or approved substitute); 2.0 Overall GPA; 2.0 GPA in the Major

 

History

2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major

 

Humanities

Minimum 15 semester hours earned, 2.0 Overall GPA

 

Liberal Studies

Please visit the Liberal Studies web site to get more information about the Liberal Studies Program.

Unless otherwise noted admission to Liberal Studies requires the student:

  • Have completed 45 semester hours of college work

  • Have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (including transfer credit hours and grades if applicable); and

  • Submit a written proposal of degree program for approval by the Liberal Studies Committee. This proposal must be approved by Dr. John Hale before the applicant can be accepted as an approved Liberal Studies major.

 

Mathematics

2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 in major and be enrolled in a math course higher than 205.

 

Paralegal Studies

2.0 overall GPA and 2.0 in the Major

 

Psychology

Effective Fall 2006:
Completion of Psych. 201 with a grade of C- or higher
Completion of 2 additional courses in Psychology at the 300+ level with minimum grades of C-
Completion of 30 degree-applicable credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

Prior to Fall 2006:

2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major

 

Sociology

Effective Fall 2006:
Must complete Soc. 301 or equivalent with a C or higher
2.0 Overall GPA, 2.0 GPA in the Major

Prior to Fall 2006: 2.0 Overall GPA and 2.0 in the Major.

 

Information on minors can be found in the catalog.  You must apply and be accepted to your major before you can apply for a minor.

After you have been accepted to your major you will see your departmental advisor.
