Graphic Design Professor Meena Khalili conducts a workshop with students in KCJ Szwedzinski’s ART200 course. Students in this course are introduced to professors from various programs in the Hite Art Institute.

The Hite Art Institute and AIGA Louisville present Environmental Graphic Designer, Derek A. Friday on Tuesday March 27th at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts. Friday's practice is based in Hamburg, Germany and Boulder, CO. He will speak about his work in the field as well as the curiosity that has kept him and his work on the cusp of design trends. The Hite Art Institute is proud to co-sponsor this event coordinated by Professor Meena Khalili in conjunction with her Design for Interaction course.

Jeremy Brown (BA 2017) and Zed Saeed (MFA student) have been chosen Collider Artists-in-Residence for the South Central Regional Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.

The Hite Art Institute will host a two-part exhibition featuring and celebrating the work of distinguished drawing professor James Grubola. The Cressman Center will feature new drawings completed over the last four years by Grubola which mark his return to the figure as his primary subject matter. Although Grubola has drawn from life on and off for all of his artistic career, administrative duties - he served as Chair of the Department of Fine Arts for 17 years, and other distractions, interrupted his drawing sessions with a model. However, after stepping down as chair, he resumed these Friday model sessions with the resulting series of graphite and silverpoint figure drawings forming the core of this exhibition of new work. Grubola has also spent many years working from moving bodies - specifically dancers. As part of his renewed focus on the figure, he also returned to drawing once a week in company class at the Louisville Ballet. These encounters form his second new body of work featured in this exhibition, "The Thursday Sessions".

In celebration of Grubola's significant impact as a teacher, the Hite Art Institute will also host an exhibition of work by Grubola's many former students (appropriately sited on campus in the Schneider Hall Galleries). More information can be found here. Both exhibitions open this January

Jim Grubola has taught at the Hite Art Institute, University of Louisville for more the 40 years. On the eve of his retirement, and as two important exhibitions open, one of his work, and one featuring some of his former students, he joins us in the studio this Thursday to talk about his life as an artist and as a teacher. "Art Now: Ethics, God, and Images of Others" lecture by Sarah Sentilles

Focusing on photography’s historical and ongoing role in constructing "others," Sarah Sentilles will explore how art and theology offer resources for resisting the forms of observation, capture, and certainty encouraged by drones and other machines of war, and she will propose an ethics capable of seeing difference as divine.

Joe McGee (BFA in Sculpture 1986, recipient of the Winthrop Allen Award). Since graduation, McGee has maintained an active exhibition schedule, presented his 2D and 3D artwork in numerous solo and group exhibitions.

In 2014, McGee curated and organized "En el Espiritu de Frida," a five-person exhibition to celebrate the life of Frida Kahlo at the Swanson Contemporary Gallery. In 2018, McGee is working on a new project "Merton Among Us: The Living Legacy of Thomas Merton" in which he conceived and organized the selection of seven visual artists and seven writer/poets to honor the life and work of Thomas Merton for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of his passing on Dec. 10, 1968. This project is being hosted in the Fall of 2018 by Spalding University, in cooperation with The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University.

McGee’s work are in many private and public collections, and he has completed several large commissioned sculptures for Woodford Reserve Distillery. McGee was a recipient of an SAF/NEA Fellowship (1988) and a Kentucky Arts Council Professional Assistance Award (1993). For the last thirty years, McGee worked at the Speed Museum as a preparator, the Kentucky Derby Museum as Curator of Exhibits, and the Kentucky Expo Center as the Information Officer/Artist.

In addition to a solo exhibition at the Hite's downtown Cressman Center for Visual Arts, the campus Schneider Hall Galleries will host "Selections from the teachings of James Grubola." The show chronicles Grubola's significant impact as a teacher through the work of his students. The show features nearly fifty works―new and old―by Grubola's former students.

Professor Mary Carothers will give a lecture "Inside and Outside of Gallery Space – Creating Visual Narratives" as part of the "Meet the Professor Series" to highlight the College's research and cultural offerings. The luncheon and talk will be held in the University Club, on Thursday, January 11 from noon to 1:30 pm. Professor Carothers will talk about how her work as a public artist is inspired by working outside of traditional spaces and how electronic representation of images and texts holds potential for community and global involvement with art.

Professor Meena Khalili’s animated TyPoFiLM has shown in the cities of Moscow and Indonesia and earlier this month was accepted to a U.S. Regional Exhibition showcasing new contemporary art being produced in the midwest. The exhibition will take place in Artlink Contemporary Gallery in Fort Wayne, Indiana from January 5th through February 9th, 2018. The juror was Danielle Riede, Associate Professor of Art at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. @artlinkfw

Professor Jongwoo Jeremy Kim's article "A Maddening Kaleidoscope of Gender" has been published in ASAP (Association for the Study of Arts of the Present) Journal.

Tammy Burke (MFA student) has been accepted into a Regional Exhibition showcasing new contemporary art being produced in the midwest. The exhibition will take place in Artlink Contemporary Gallery in Fort Wayne, Indiana from January 5th through February 9th, 2018. Burke, an interdisciplinary artist, will be showing a three dimensional painting. The juror was Danielle Riede, Associate Professor of Art at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis.

Monica Stewart (MFA student) was recently interviewed by an international literary journal based in Vermont, called Mud Season Review.
