Congratulations to Professor Chris Reitz, Critical and Curatorial Studies, for receiving the President's Award for Distinguished Service to the Community! In addition to the Arts and Science's Award, Professor Reitz received the President's Award for his continued work on Louisville's Commission on Public Art, the mayor's special commission reviewing Louisville's public monuments, his work helping to bring art to the Louisville Airport, and his work with Louisville Visual Art to develop and realize Louisville's Open Studio Weekend. Professor Reitz has also been recognized for bringing engaged programming to the city through exhibitions, panels, and lectures, and through his frequent contributions to local media.

MFA Candidate Zed Saeed's work for the Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project is being shown at the Iroquois Library Community Gallery. The project was made possible by a grant from the Kentucky Arts Council.

All images are of refugees and immigrants that have been settled around Kentucky by local refugee settlement agencies.

Professor Ying Kit Chan delivered the keynote address at the 2018 Woodcock Society's annual induction ceremony on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. The Woodcock Society is College of Arts and Sciences' oldest honor society. The title of his lecture was "Contemporary Art: Theory, Practice, and Education."

The Hite Art Institute presents an exhibition by Louisville artist Douglas Miller at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts April 27 – Aug. 4. The show, which serves as Miller’s culminating thesis for his Master of Fine Arts degree, will feature approximately 100 drawings and a projected animation. Most of the images are not complete, however. They are fragments, wisps of ideas not fully realized, in keeping with the theme of the show.

Playfully called “Title,” the show considers the disorganization of the creative process — how a person fails to bring a large-scale project to fruition. Miller was inspired by the novel Dead Souls by Russian author Nikolai Gogol. Gogol always planned to write three volumes, but he deteriorated creatively and psychologically and never finished the series. “Most people have failed or not met goals they’re expected to meet,” Miller says. “It’s not a theme specific to this one author, it’s universal. Self-doubt and other feelings that come with completing a large project are familiar to everyone.” Miller earned his BFA from Hite. His drawings are in galleries across the U.S. and numerous private collections.

Henry Kerns and Sara Olshansky have been awarded the Covi Scholarships on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.

The Dario Covi Scholarships are given to students in their last year of study who reflect the hallmarks of Dr. Dario Covi through civic-minded engagement in all aspects of the department, work across media boundaries and programmatic divisions, and in the broadest sense, reflect the traditions of the Hite Art Institute.

A native of Livingston, Illinois, Professor Dario Covi studied at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, the University of Iowa, University of London, University of Florence and New York University where he received his PhD in Art History in 1958. Dr. Covi joined the faculty of the Department of Fine Arts in 1956 at the rank of Instructor and was subsequently promoted to Professor in 1964. He served as the Curator of University Collection and Exhibitions (1958-1963), Acting Head of the Department of Fine Arts (1960-63) and the Department Chairperson and the Director of the Allen R. Hite Art Institute (1963-67 and 1976-79).

Dr. Covi is a teacher and lecturer of the highest caliber. He is a highly respected scholar and of Italian Renaissance art history and an authority of the life and work of Andrea del Verrocchio of Florence. He has written numerous articles on Italian Renaissance, as well as many essays on local, regional and national artists published in exhibition catalogues.

At 97 years of age, Dr. Covi is coming to work and study in the library several days a week. His pleasant personality, tireless dedication, noble character and insightful wisdom have continued to inspire the faculty, staff and students and brighten the Department. Dr. Covi's contributions to the University and to the Hite Art Institute are immeasurable.

Congratulations to Professor Tiffany Calvert for receiving a grant for her proposal, "Tulip Mania and Data Manipulation” from the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation. Wildlands Social Club - Featured Speaker: Rachel Singel
Talk title: Fundamental Unity & Infinite Variety

Rachel grew up on a small farm outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. Her work is inspired by what she sees in nature. Rachel has participated in residencies at the Penland School of Crafts, the Venice Printmaking Studio, and the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia. Currently, she is an Artist In Residence at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, and in June will be traveling to Spain for a residency at Art Print Residence in Barcelona and continuing to learn about non-toxic printmaking in an international workshop.

Hite alumni and faculty receive Great Meadows Foundation Grants:

Two Hite alumni and three Hite faculty members have been awarded grants in the 7th round of Great Meadows Foundation Artist Professional Development Grants program. The Hite alumni are Bette Levy (MA, 1998) and Cynthia Norton (MAT, 2004), and the faculty members are Mary Carothers, Mitch Eckert, and Meena Khalili. Congratulations!

The Hite Art Institute is pleased to present an exhibition from the University of Louisville’s print collection. Curated by students in the Critical and Curatorial Studies II class, “Caprices: Wit & Whimsy” transforms the white cube gallery into a space that invites laughter. The humor framed within this show is meant to break that invisible barrier one crosses when entering the gallery; the prints welcome candid, reflexive responses. Since the impact of visual humor is instantaneous and can be undermined by over-explanation or analysis, this exhibition aims to allow for both instant gratification and complex reading.

“Caprices: Wit & Whimsy” includes work by Édouard Manet, Francisco Goya, Tom Huck, Bob Lockhart, Honoré Daumier, Mel Ramos, Cima Katz, among others, and was curated by Diana Dillman, Alexis Doerr, Adelaide McComb, Jessica Schumacher, Layne Wegenast, and Stephanie Wise.

Congratulations to Judy Chicago on her inclusion in the TIME 100 Most Influential People! The International Honor Quilt, in the Hite Art Collection, is a collaborative, grassroots feminist art project initiated by Judy Chicago in 1980 “to extend the spirit of The Dinner Party” on its tour of venues throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. It consists of a collection of 542 individual quilts that can be assembled into a multi-sectional, monumental work of art.

Professor Chris Reitz, Critical and Curatorial Studies, delivered a lecture, April 25th, for the Dean's Speaker Series in Visual Culture at SUNY Binghamton.

Recently, Professor Tiffany Calvert spoke at Critical Mass II, a discussion on the role of criticism for KY artists regionally and nationally, with Great Meadows inaugural Critic-in-Residence Dan Cameron, and VinhayKeo, Emily Elizabeth Goodman, and Joey Yates.
